With the increase rate of obesity diabetes has been a common problem that affects the body’s ability to use blood sugar for energy.  There are three types – type 1 diabetes, Type 2 diabetes and gestational diabetes.  Of the three, Type 2 diabetes is called non-insulin dependent diabetes, and it is the most common form of diabetes, affecting 90% - 95% of people.  Many serious diabetes complications may arise if blood sugar levels not managed for a long period of time.  

Diet no doubt plays a huge role in reducing the risk of diabetes.  Doctors generally prescribe diabetic diet which if followed properly with regular exercise will help one to control diabetes.  Diabetic diet can be taken alone or one can combine it with medicines or insulin, it’s up to your wish.  It’s difficult to change food patterns all of a sudden, start slow.  Start with adding high-fiber foods - more of fresh fruits and vegetables and less meat and sweets into your diet.  Fiber helps the body to regulate blood sugar. One can eat whole grains such as brown rice, grits and oatmeal.  Eat up to three to four daily servings of fresh fruits and vegetables high in fiber.  You can add fish and seafood to your diet.  Eggs are also an excellent option.
